National climate experts work on a variety of domestic issues, including climate and energy policy, energy projects, business cooperations, science-driven work on climate change impacts, and resistance and resilience building for communities that are already affected.
The national climate campaigners are often also supporting international policy issues. WWF trains all staff in international policy and even newcomers become part of the WWF delegations to international climate conferences.
Regional and national strategies help to realise our common global targets.
What are our targets?
WWF’s current targets in the climate change programme are listed below. They will be reviewed in July 2007.
TARGET 1
By 2010 the world has made significant progress to stay below a 2 °C increase in global average temperature compared to pre-industrial levels.
Milestones include:
- Legislation to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the power sector has passed in 25 countries by 2007.
- At least 20 companies have taken action to improve their carbon management performance and/or are supporting a selection of our policy asks by 2007.
- At least one major financial institution declares publicly that it is shifting its power sector investment away from coal and into renewables and energy efficiency and shows credible practical steps for doing so by 2007.
- An international agreement, based on the Kytoto Protocol, is finalized by 2007 that is consistent with the target of staying below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
- Half a million people are consistently taking action in support of WWF's climate change work by 2006.
TARGET 2
55 countries are implementing adaptation strategies in key Ecoregions/biomes and sectors of their economies on the basis of national plans, to reduce vulnerability to climate change.
Milestones include:
- Develop awareness of the need for mitigation and adaptation on a broad scale.
- Pilot projects are in progress, testing methodologies engaged with future implementers in 5 ecoregions.
- 10 countries are developing national adaptation strategies.
- 10 ecoregions are incorporating climate vulnerability and implementing adaptation strategies in Ecoregion Action Plans and milestones.
