Millennium Development Goals

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) represent a set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets for combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women.

They commit the international community to a coordinated and holistic vision of development. It is a vision that is seen to promote human development as the key to sustaining social and economic progress around the world. It also recognizes the importance of creating a global partnership for this development. (More...)

History of the Goals
Many of the targets of the MDGs were first set out by international conferences and summits held in the 1990s. Later on, they were compiled and became known as the International Development Goals.

In September 2000, following the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Millennium Declaration and later recognized the Millennium Development Goals as part of the road map for implementing the Millennium Declaration.

The UN Secretary-General issues a yearly report on progress toward implementation of the Millennium Declaration, including the MDGs, based on information drawn from across the UN system

The first comprehensive review is in 2005. With the target date for meeting the goals set for 2015.
