What is Millennium Summit?
In 2000 Heads of State from around the world signed onto the Millennium Declaration.
From this Declaration comes the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the international community's targets for development and poverty reduction.
n New York, in September 2005, the UN will host a summit to review the implementation of the Millennium Declaration and measure progress on the MDGs.It will be the biggest international forum this year attended at head of state level.
Yet at this moment, numerous reviews confirm that despite spectacular growth in China, India and a few other countries, the world is falling behind in achieving the MDGs.
Socio-economic statistics tabled by UN agencies, the World Bank and others show clearly that at the current pace the MDGs social targets for 2015 will not be attained in many regions.
Equally troubling, environmental statistics tabled by WWF, WRI, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and others show clearly that environmental sustainability (MDG 7) is on the decline.
