Regional conservation strategy aims to reverse decline of Asian wild cattle and buffaloes
Vietnam - The first-ever regional conservation planning workshop for Asian wild cattle and buffalos was held from 8-17 June, 2008 in Tam Dao National Park, Vietnam. The event was sponsored by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), Earthwatch Institute and the Wildlife Conservation Society. The aim of the workshop was to develop an action plan to reverse the dramatic decline of Asian wild cattle and buffalo species. » Read more

WWF Urges Krabi People to Prepare with Global Warming

On June 9, WWF and the Southeast Asia START regional centre based at Chulalongkorn University organized a workshop to explore the potential impacts of climate change on the province of Krabi in southern Thailand.  The workshop entitled “Global Warming and the impacts on Natural Resources, Economy, and Local Communities in Krabi” was attended by over 100 people including representatives from senior government officials, local government, local businesses, NGOs, and local communities.

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The Day was established by UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP).

Ministers commit to zero net deforestation by 2020
Bonn –  As at 30 May 2008 when the 9th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP9) ended, 67 countries plus the European Commission and others including the CBD Secretariat, Commission of Forestry in Central Africa (COMIFAC) and UNEP, had signed on to support WWF's call for zero net deforestation by 2020. Environmental protection vital to reducing natural disaster impact: WWF

Bonn, May 20, 2008 – Environmental degradation is a key factor turning extreme weather events into natural disasters, a new WWF report has found. WWF is urging governments to create suitable protected areas and to maintaining natural ecosystems, such as coastal mangroves, coral reefs, floodplains and forest, that may help buffer against natural hazards.
