Margaret Williams is the director of WWF's Bering Sea and Kamchatka program. She has focused on Russian conservation issues for 15 years, and has lived in Siberia, Karelia and Moscow. Now based in Alaska, she also works on international Arctic issues. Margaret holds a degree in environmental studies and is fluent in Russian. She also founded and continues to edit "Russian Conservation News." Before joining WWF in 1997, Margaret worked as a consultant to the World Bank on biodiversity projects in Russia and Central Asia.

Urgent action needed to protect polar bears, WWF expert testifies

The overwhelming body of peer-reviewed science regarding the relationship of declining arctic sea ice to declines in polar bear populations meets the statutory criteria requiring a listing as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, WWF’s Margaret Williams told the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works in a hearing held today in Washington, DC that examined threats and protections for the polar bear.
